Tennōji Zoo, Municipal zoo in Tennōji Park, Osaka, Japan.
Tennōji Zoo is a zoological park spanning about 11 hectares in Osaka with distinct zones including an African Savanna, Asian Tropical Rainforest, and a Friendship Garden featuring domestic animals. More than a thousand animals representing about 180 species live in these different areas.
The facility opened in 1915 as Japan's third zoo established at that time. It has continued to develop over the decades, recently adding new sections such as the World of Birds that opened in November 2023.
The zoo serves as a place where visitors connect with wildlife from around the world in thoughtfully designed environments. The different zones recreate natural habitats, helping people understand how animals live in their native regions.
The facility is open most days, though checking current hours is recommended since times can vary depending on the season and day of the week. Comfortable walking shoes are a good idea, as you will spend considerable time moving between the different zones.
The facility houses New Zealand kiwis in its Nocturnal House, making it the only place in Japan where visitors can see these flightless birds. This exceptional feature draws particular attention from bird watchers and nature enthusiasts.
