Mount Ōkue, Mountain peak in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan.
Mount Ōkue is a peak standing 1,643 meters (5,394 ft) high in Miyazaki Prefecture with dense forest cover and exposed granite formations. The climb includes around 50 sections equipped with ladders and ropes to help navigate the rocky terrain.
Mining activity took place on and around the mountain from the late Edo period through the mid-Shōwa period. Traces of these operations remain visible near the base of the peak today.
The mountain draws hikers who value the connection to nature and the challenge of navigating its terrain. The paths and established routes show how local visitors have developed their own relationship with this place over time.
This climb requires solid rock scrambling experience and proper equipment, as the exposed sections are not for beginners. Plan for a full day of hiking and bring adequate gear for steep and rough terrain.
Hikers must cross the Houri River twice as part of the circuit route, which can be difficult during rainy periods. Water levels fluctuate and can sometimes make completion of the full loop impossible.
