増富温泉, Radioactive hot spring in Hokuto, Japan
Masutomi Onsen is a hot spring resort in Yamanashi Prefecture located at 1000 meters elevation, featuring natural thermal waters with high concentrations of radon and radium. The facility spans nine lodging properties offering 560 guest accommodations.
The springs were discovered in the 16th century by warlord Takeda Shingen, who used them to treat wounded soldiers from the Kawanakajima battles. This early medical application established the foundation for later development as a healing destination.
The facility maintains traditional Japanese bathing customs with indoor and outdoor pools set within mountain surroundings.
The site welcomes visitors daily from 10:00 AM to 11:30 PM with an entrance fee of 800 yen per person. The nine lodging options offer different comfort levels, so comparing facilities according to your preferences and budget makes sense.
University of Tokyo researchers confirmed the springs contain one of the highest natural radon concentrations in thermal waters worldwide. This scientific validation helped establish the site's international recognition as a significant thermal destination.
