Masuyama Castle, Mountain castle in Tonami, Japan
Masuyama Castle is a hilltop fortress in Tonami built on elevated terrain with multiple defensive lines. The site preserves old ditches, earthen walls, well foundations, and watchtower platforms distributed across several ridges.
The castle was founded in 1394 and served as the Jinbo clan's headquarters until 1576 when Uesugi Kenshin captured it during regional conflicts. Following this conquest, the site lost its military importance and was eventually abandoned.
The annual Masuyama Castle Sengoku Festival in autumn brings visitors to experience medieval Japanese military traditions through demonstrations and events.
Visitors can rent bicycles from Tonami Station and reach the castle entrance in about 45 minutes, with parking available at Masuyama Guard Station. The route is well-marked and passes through peaceful countryside terrain.
The site features an audio guide narrated by rakugo performer Shota Shunputei, accessible through QR codes placed at various locations throughout the castle grounds. This spoken guide brings the location's history to life in an engaging and personal way.
