Saburoumaru distillery, Whisky distillery in Tonami, Japan

Saburoumaru Distillery processes regional ingredients through copper stills to create spirits shaped by the mineral water and climate of Toyama Prefecture. The facility combines traditional distillation methods with local resources to produce whisky and other spirits on site.

The distillery started in 1947 as part of the Wakatsuru Sake Brewery and began producing Sunshine Whisky in 1953. This shift from sake to whisky production marked an expansion into new types of spirits.

The distillery showcases traditional copper craftsmanship from Takaoka through its distillation equipment, which represents skilled metalwork still valued in the area. This connection to local trades is visible in the working equipment visitors see during their time here.

Visitors can explore the facility through guided tours that show the production areas and explain how spirits are made. Complimentary tastings allow guests to sample the various products before leaving.

The facility uses Mizunara oak barrels made from local Toyama wood, crafted using regional carpentry techniques. This particular wood imparts distinctive flavor qualities to the maturing whisky that reflect the local environment.
