Sumata-kyō

Sumata-kyō, Canyon in Kawanehon, Japan.

Sumata-kyō is a canyon carved by the Sumata River, featuring steep rock walls and a narrow passage through forested terrain. The water displays striking turquoise hues as it winds between the towering slopes on either side.

The canyon formed over many centuries as the Sumata River carved through rock, eventually merging with the Oi River in the Southern Alps. This long process of erosion created the deep gorge visible today.

Local residents maintain traditional onsen baths near the canyon, where mineral-rich waters reach temperatures of 43 degrees Celsius.

Access is by train to Senzu station on the Oigawa Main Line, followed by a bus ride to reach the site. Sturdy footwear is recommended since paths along the canyon can be uneven and slippery.

The Yume no Tsuribashi suspension bridge crosses the gorge and is notable for how it limits crossings to small groups at a time. This controlled approach gives the passage a distinctive character compared to other canyon viewpoints.
