Iwagi islet, Island in Seto Inland Sea, Japan
Iwagi is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea, part of the Kamijima Islands group in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. Its coastline is rocky, and the interior mixes small fishing settlements with patches of farmland.
Iwagi functioned as its own village within Ochi District until October 2004, when it merged with neighboring islands to form Kamijima town. Before that, each island in the area had managed its own local affairs independently for a long time.
Along the harbor, small fishing boats go out early each morning, setting the pace for the rest of the day on the island. The catch is handled and sorted in the open, making the work of local fishers a visible part of daily life.
The island is only reachable by ferry, so it is worth checking departure times before you travel. Once there, walking is the most practical way to get around, as the roads are narrow and traffic is light.
Despite its small size, Iwagi has ferry links to several nearby islands and not only to the mainland. This makes it a possible starting point for visiting other islands in the Kamijima group rather than just a final stop.
