Hitachi Kokubunji, Provincial temple and Special Historic Site in Ishioka, Japan

Hitachi Kokubunji is a provincial temple and Special Historic Site with extensive remains spread across a large area. The grounds reveal ancient foundations, multiple buildings, covered arcades, and a pagoda structure that convey the layout of the original complex.

Emperor Shōmu ordered the construction of provincial temples nationwide in 741 to address a smallpox outbreak, leading to this site's establishment in 752. These temples were built to bring spiritual stability and protection to their respective provinces.

The temple follows traditions of the Shingon-shū Chizan-ha sect, embodying religious practices rooted in the former Hitachi Province. Visitors can sense this spiritual connection through the rituals and spaces maintained on the grounds today.

The site is walkable from Ishioka Station and sits on open grounds that are easy to explore. The exposed foundations and excavated remains allow visitors to grasp the scale and layout of the original complex.

Archaeological digs revealed the original main hall was four times larger than structures visible today. The roof tiles from that earlier building came from the same workshops as those used at Heijō-kyō palace, showing links to imperial centers.
