Hitachi Kokubunji, Provincial temple and Special Historic Site in Ishioka, Japan
The temple complex spans across 270 meters by 240 meters, featuring ancient foundations, gates, halls, cloisters, and a pagoda within its grounds.
Emperor Shōmu ordered the construction of provincial temples throughout Japan in 741 AD following a smallpox epidemic, leading to Hitachi Kokubunji's establishment in 752.
The temple maintains Buddhist traditions of the Shingon-shū Chizan-ha sect and serves as a connection to the religious practices of former Hitachi Province.
Visitors can reach the temple grounds by taking a ten-minute walk from Ishioka Station on the JR East Jōban Line.
Archaeological surveys revealed that the original main hall measured four times larger than the current structure, with roof tiles matching those of Heijō-kyō palace.
