Iwatono Yamajiro is a mountain fortress in Otsuki that rises 634 meters above sea level. The peak displays stone walls and fortification remains scattered along hiking paths and steep cliff faces.
The fortress was controlled by the Oyamada clan during the Sengoku period and made use of natural rock formations and steep cliffs as defense. The site's natural features provided built-in protection for the stronghold.
The mountain is known as one of the Twelve Views of Mount Fuji and provides clear sightlines to Japan's highest peak from several vantage points. Visitors can take in this famous sight from different spots along the peak.
The round-trip hiking route takes roughly four and a half hours, with chains installed at steeper sections for safety. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow sufficient time for both the climb and descent.
The peak shares the exact elevation of 634 meters with Tokyo Skytree, a modern structure on the other side of the country. The distinctive Kabuto Rock formation is visible from passing trains, revealing the site's character to commuters.
