Fukashiro Dam, Gravity dam in Otsuki, Japan
Fukashiro Dam is a concrete gravity structure spanning the Sagami River near Otsuki, designed to regulate water flow and provide hydroelectric benefits. The dam employs gravity principles, where the weight of the concrete itself resists water pressure from behind.
Construction began in 1996 with diversion tunnels dug to redirect the river, and the structure reached its full height by 2001. Full operational status was achieved in 2004, completing a multi-year development process.
The dam represents Japanese engineering excellence in water management, integrating traditional flood control methods with modern construction techniques.
The best views of the structure come from the valley below or from vantage points along the river approach. Access may be restricted during poor weather or maintenance work, so checking conditions beforehand is helpful.
The reservoir holds 6.44 million cubic meters of water and collects drainage from a catchment area of 43.3 square kilometers.
