Kōchi-ji

Kōchi-ji is a temple with a five-tiered burgundy pagoda rising above its wooded grounds. The complex features historic buildings, a large main hall, and maintained gardens that structure the grounds.

The site was founded in the 8th century as Buddhism spread across Japan and new temples were built. It has been known since then as the 31st station on the country's main pilgrimage route.

The temple draws pilgrims and worshippers who come here to pray and seek spiritual connection. The spaces inside are filled with the quiet focus of people taking time for their personal devotion.

The grounds are easy to visit and allow visitors to walk at their own pace and explore different areas. The paths are well-marked and access to the main buildings is open to visitors for an entrance fee.

The temple sits on a famous pilgrimage route of 88 sites where walkers follow the footsteps of the 9th-century monk Kobo Daishi. Today, people from many countries come here to retrace this ancient journey.
