Mount Rakanji, Mountain in Kofu, Japan
Mount Rakanji, also known as Rakanji-yama, is a mountain in Kofu, Japan, with a summit elevation of 1,058 meters. It is part of the Okuchichibu Mountains and is composed of three peaks: Yasaburo-dake, Tenbodai, and Panorama-dai, which together form the mountain known as Rakanji-yama.
The mountain has long been a site of worship, with the Yasaburo Gongen shrine located just below the summit. In 2019, it was selected as one of the 'Kofu Meizan' (Famous Mountains of Kofu), recognizing its importance to the region.
Near the ropeway station, there is a small teahouse and the Yagumo Shrine, where visitors often stop to rest and take in the views. The name Yasaburo comes from a legendary sake brewer who was so skilled that his sake was presented to the Takeda clan.
To reach the summit, you can take the Shosenkyo Ropeway and then walk for about 10 minutes, or hike from the Furusato Shizen Kansatsuro trailhead near Shishi-daira, which takes around 2 hours and 40 minutes. The ropeway operates from 9:00 to 17:10, but in winter it closes earlier at 16:10, so plan your visit accordingly.
The final stretch to the summit includes a chain-assisted section over rocky terrain, adding a bit of adventure to the climb. From the top, on clear days, you can see Mount Fuji, the Southern Alps, and the Okuchichibu mountains.
