Shin'en, Japanese strolling garden at Heian Shrine, Kyoto, Japan

The Shin'en garden spans 33,000 square meters with four sections surrounding the main shrine building, featuring ponds, stone paths and native plants.

Landscape architect Jihei Ogawa VII completed the Naka and Nishi sections in 1895, followed by the Higashi section in 1916.

The garden incorporates traditional Japanese landscaping techniques developed over a millennium in Heian-kyo, earning designation as a Place of Scenic Beauty.

Water from Lake Biwa Canal flows through the garden, creating ponds where visitors can observe seasonal changes in flora throughout the year.

The garden features four distinct areas named after cardinal directions: Higashi, Naka, Nishi, and Minami, each displaying different landscape compositions.
