Former Okada Residence, Traditional machiya and sake brewery in Miyanomae, Japan
The Former Okada Residence is a traditional Japanese house and sake brewery with architectural elements dating to the 17th century in Itami. The building combines a shop area with historic brewing equipment under one roof.
The house was built in 1674 by sake brewer Yohe Matsuya and came into the Okada family ownership in 1900. The brewing operation represents the oldest sake brewery in all of Japan.
The shop section functions as the oldest surviving machiya in Hyogo Prefecture and remains in use as a sales space today. Visitors can observe how this area reflects traditional commercial layouts from earlier times.
The house sits within walking distance of JR Itami Station and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors should expect narrow pathways between different areas and should allow time to look around carefully.
The brewing section displays original sake-making tools from the Edo period, including historic barrels, kilns, and a traditional well. These objects show how production took place centuries ago.
