The Itami City Museum of Insects is a facility in Koyaike Park devoted to displaying live insects from around the world. Visitors can observe butterflies in a dome-shaped greenhouse as well as around 30 different insect species kept in terrariums and enclosures in dedicated rooms.
The museum was established in November 1990 to mark the 50th anniversary of Itami City. Following the 2011 tsunami disaster, it played an important role in preserving insect collections from damaged institutions, demonstrating collaboration among Japanese museums.
The facility contributed to preserving insect specimens from Rikuzentakata City Museum after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, demonstrating Japanese museum cooperation.
The museum is open during daytime hours and visiting is straightforward - simply walk in and explore the insect displays at your own pace. The facility is located within a park setting, so there is plenty of space and the exhibits are easily accessible on foot.
The museum houses one of only three collections of leaf insects in Japan, displaying these rare green insects for viewing. This specialized collection makes it a notable destination for anyone interested in observing these unusual species.
