Matsuokayama Kofun

Matsuokayama Kofun is an ancient burial mound located in Kashiwara with the distinctive keyhole shape typical of such sites from that era. The mound features a rectangular section connected to a large circular area, all situated on elevated ground.

The burial mound was constructed in the 4th century to honor someone of high rank within ancient Japanese society. Systematic excavations conducted over several decades revealed a wealth of artifacts that provide a window into the past.

The burial mound's distinctive keyhole shape was built to reflect the status of those buried there, serving as a symbol of power and authority in ancient Japan. This design choice was reserved for the ruling classes and made the site instantly recognizable.

The site sits on elevated terrain, so wear comfortable shoes when exploring the different sections. Taking time to walk around the entire complex helps you appreciate the scale and layout of the mound.

Inside, the burial chamber was built with specially crafted stones designed to hold the deceased, with some stones featuring distinctive protruding elements. This careful construction reveals how much thought ancient builders put into creating dignified resting places.
