Kutsugata Port, Maritime port in Rishiri Island, Japan
Kutsugata Port is a fishing and cargo port on the western coast of Rishiri, a remote island off the northern tip of Hokkaido, Japan. It has several quays used by fishing vessels and smaller freight boats that serve the island's daily needs.
The port grew through the 20th century as the main landing point for fishermen on the western side of Rishiri. In the early 2000s, the facilities were expanded to handle a broader range of vessels and heavier freight traffic.
Fishing boats leave early in the morning from this port, and locals often gather at the dockside to unload sea urchin and kelp, two products closely tied to the island's food identity. These same ingredients appear in simple meals served at small restaurants nearby.
The port is located in Kutsugata village and is easy to reach along the main coastal road that circles the island. Visitors exploring Rishiri by bicycle or rental car will pass directly by the waterfront without needing to detour.
Just beside the port, a line of jagged rock formations rises directly from the sea and forms a coastal park that most visitors walking the harbor miss entirely. From the edge of the quay, you can see both the working port and these formations at the same time.
