橘樹神社, Shinto shrine in Japan
Kitatsuga Shrine is a Shinto sanctuary in Yokohama surrounded by old trees that creates a quiet place for prayer. The grounds include a torii gate, main worship hall, and several smaller shrines, all carefully maintained with carved details and stone monuments.
The shrine was founded in the late Heian period and owes its origin to the transfer of worship of Susanoo from the Gion Shrine in Kyoto. Over centuries it survived wars, fires, and natural disasters, being repeatedly rebuilt by the community.
The shrine is deeply rooted in the local community and serves as a spiritual gathering place for residents of all ages. Regular ceremonies and seasonal festivals bring neighbors together and show how this location shapes the cultural life of the area.
The shrine sits near the Kaisugawa River and is accessible by foot from the local train station. There is a small parking area on site, and visitors can arrive comfortably in regular clothing without needing a travel guide.
The site holds one of the oldest stone monuments, a Koshin tower dated to 1669, said to be among the oldest in Yokohama. Seeing this stone feels like touching Yokohama's past with your own hands.
