Navy Memorial Museum, Naval museum at JMSDF Maizuru Naval Base, Japan
The Navy Memorial Museum is a naval museum on the grounds of the JMSDF Maizuru Naval Base, displaying around 500 exhibits related to Japanese naval history. It is housed in a building that once belonged to a former naval engineering school on the base.
The museum opened in 1964 inside a building that originally served the base's naval engineering school. The base was established in 1901 and grew into one of the main shipbuilding centers of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
The museum displays personal belongings of Admiral Heihachiro Togo, one of the most recognized figures in Japanese naval history, including uniforms and medals. Many visitors come specifically for this collection, which connects directly to one of the defining sea battles of the early 20th century.
The museum is open on weekends and public holidays and admission is free. It is located on an active military base, so visitors should bring a valid ID for entry.
The base grounds still hold original dry docks and industrial cranes from the Meiji era, visible from outside. These structures were never demolished and are among the few surviving industrial remnants of that period in Japan.
