Maizuru City Commemoration Hall, History museum in Maizuru Red Brick Warehouses complex, Japan.
The Maizuru City Commemoration Hall sits within a group of red brick buildings that display early 1900s industrial architecture. Inside, the museum arranges its exhibits across multiple sections showing objects from different time periods and cultures.
The building started as a naval torpedo storage facility in 1903. Later, the government recognized it as Japan's first steel-frame brick structure, marking an important moment in the country's architectural development.
The hall displays artifacts from ancient civilizations including Egypt, China, and Greece, with bricks that reveal how different cultures approached building techniques. Walking through the exhibits, you notice how construction methods varied across the ancient world.
The hall is close to Higashi Maizuru Station, making it simple to reach by train. The site has parking available, and the interior layout is clearly marked so you can move through it without confusion.
In 1993, the museum received bricks from Portsmouth, England, connected to the establishment of sister city relations between Maizuru and Portsmouth. These stones represent the international connections the city has built over time.
