Wakutamaike, Sacred spring and artificial pond at Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha shrine, Japan

Wakutamaike is an artificial pond at the base of Mount Fuji, fed by an underground volcanic spring. Water flows daily from this natural fissure into a basin that visitors can see and walk around.

People have used this spring for cleansing and prayer rituals before climbing the mountain for many generations. Over time, the site became an established part of mountain pilgrimage traditions in the region.

The spring has served pilgrims preparing for their mountain climb for centuries. Visitors can see how the clear water shapes the shrine grounds and why this place remains connected to Mount Fuji's spiritual significance.

The site is easy to reach on foot and accessible throughout the year in all weather conditions. Pathways around the basin allow you to walk freely and observe the water and surroundings at your own pace.

The water maintains a constant temperature of around 14 degrees Celsius year-round. From certain angles, the water becomes nearly invisible due to its exceptional clarity, creating an unexpected visual effect.
