Lake Yunoko, Landslide-dammed lake in Nikko, Japan.
Lake Yunoko is a landslide-dammed lake nestled in Nikko National Park at 1,475 meters elevation. Dense coniferous forests encircle the water, creating a wooded shoreline that extends roughly three kilometers around the lake.
The lake formed through an ancient eruption of Mount Mitsudake that created a natural barrier across the Yugawa River. This geological event shaped the landscape centuries ago and gave rise to the water body we see today.
The lake draws fishing enthusiasts throughout the warmer months who practice catch-and-release techniques in its cool waters. This fishing tradition connects visitors to the natural rhythms of the mountain environment.
The site is easiest to reach by bus, with a journey of roughly 90 minutes from Nikko city to the lakeside stop. Plan your visit for May through September when weather conditions are most favorable and paths around the lake are easiest to navigate.
The surrounding wetlands form part of a protected marshland area recognized for its rare plant and animal species. Visitors who explore the edges and inlets may encounter flora and fauna found nowhere else in the region.
