Izumi, dissolved municipality in Miyagi prefecture, Japan
Izumi is the northern part of Sendai city in Miyagi Prefecture, made up primarily of residential neighborhoods where daily life unfolds along streets and through local communities. The area contains schools, parks, shops, Tohoku Gakuin University campus, and Yurtec Stadium where sports and events bring people together.
The area has been settled since the Japanese Paleolithic period, later inhabited by the Emishi people and controlled by powerful clans during the Heian period. The Date clan took control during the Edo period and established Sendai nearby, which became the regional center and shaped development for centuries to come.
Izumi displays local symbols such as the pine tree, narcissus flower, and common pheasant in festivals and community identity. These elements reflect how residents connect to the natural surroundings and express their attachment to this place.
The terrain ranges from flat to hilly with mountains to the west, including Izumigatake which rises over 1,150 meters (3,800 feet) and offers hiking trails and views. Access is straightforward via Sendai Subway lines and main roads connecting to other neighborhoods and areas beyond.
Most of the current population moved here during the second half of the 20th century after incorporation into Sendai in 1988. This rapid growth transformed what was once a quiet place with farms and traditional houses into a modern residential area with constant renewal and change.
