神奈川県立外語短期大学付属高等学校, Highschool in Japan
This high school in Yokohama was a public institution specializing in foreign language education, particularly English with double the class hours of typical schools. The curriculum also included French, Chinese, Spanish, and German taught at university level.
The school was established in 1965 and gained an affiliated junior college in 1968 that enabled deeper language study. In 2008 it merged with another school to become Yokohama International High School.
The school fostered a relaxed environment where students wore casual clothes and participated in debates and research projects conducted in foreign languages. This approach encouraged students to think and communicate directly in the languages they were learning.
The school was located in the Isogo ward in a quiet area with easy access from the station. Visitors should know that the original building is no longer in operation, but the history of the place remains alive through the memories of former students.
An unusual feature was that no school bell rang during exam time, creating a focused learning environment. Several graduates became television announcers and singers who went on to use their language skills in international careers.
