Shiretoko Pass, Mountain pass between Rausu and Shari, Japan.
Shiretoko Pass is a mountain crossing that connects the western and eastern coasts of Shiretoko Peninsula at an elevation of 738 meters (2,423 feet). The road travels through forest and exposed highland terrain that shifts dramatically with the seasons.
The pass developed as a route connecting the two coasts of the peninsula and became recognized as a key natural landmark in Hokkaido. Over time it served as an important way for people to cross the mountainous terrain.
The pass area represents traditional Ainu territories, where indigenous communities maintained connections with the natural environment through seasonal activities.
The road closes from early November through late April due to heavy snow and ice making it impassable. Bus services operate only between June and October, so plan your visit during these months for reliable access.
The observation point at the pass offers views of Mount Rausu and Kunashiri Island across the water, creating a striking vista that changes with the light. Early autumn brings some of Japan's first seasonal color changes here, drawing visitors who want to catch the fall foliage early.
