Sekihoku Pass, Mountain pass between Kamikawa and Kitami, Japan.
Sekihoku Pass is a mountain passage through the Central Ishikari Mountains that connects northern regions of Hokkaido by way of National Route 39. It sits at around 43.65 degrees latitude and forms a natural divide between two distinct areas.
The pass became an important route between the former provinces of Ishikari and Kitami, enabling trade across northern Hokkaido. This connection shaped how people settled and developed the wider region over time.
The area around the pass keeps alive the heritage of Hokkaido's Ainu people through local customs, place names, and ways of life that visitors can observe today.
You can reach the pass via National Route 273, with parking areas available for exploring the surrounding trails. Plan your visit outside of winter, when snow can block the roads.
The pass shifts through four distinct seasons: snow-covered terrain in winter, wildflower meadows in spring, thick forests in summer, and colorful autumn foliage. Each season offers a completely different experience when you visit.
