福良港, Maritime port in Minamiawaji, Japan
Fukura Port is a working harbor on the southern tip of Awaji Island, in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. The port has docks for fishing boats and cargo vessels, sheltered by breakwaters that face the Kii Channel and the Naruto Strait.
Before the Onaruto Bridge opened, this port served as the main ferry link between Awaji Island and Shikoku. When the bridge was completed, ferry traffic stopped, but the harbor continued as a base for local fishing.
For many locals, this port was the main gateway between Awaji Island and Shikoku for generations, and that memory is still part of how people talk about the place. Today, fishermen work the docks in the early morning, and dried seafood is often sold directly from boats or nearby stalls.
The breakwaters are accessible on foot and popular with people who come to fish, though some sections are marked for specific uses, so it is worth checking signs on arrival. Coming early in the morning gives a better sense of the harbor when fishing boats return and activity picks up.
From the breakwaters, visitors can sometimes see the Naruto whirlpools forming in the strait below without boarding a boat. The swirling water is most visible during tidal changes in spring and autumn, when the current through the narrow channel is at its strongest.
