Inaridai No. 1 Kofun, Ancient burial mound in Ichihara, Japan
Inaridai No. 1 Kofun is an ancient burial mound measuring 28 meters across that contains two wooden coffins positioned deep within the earthen structure. The interior construction shows careful planning with a deliberate layout designed to contain the remains and grave goods.
The mound was built in the 5th century as a burial place for members of the warrior class. Archaeological excavation has revealed much about burial practices and the military culture of that period.
The burial site reflects how people of that era viewed rank and power through what they placed in the grave. The arrangement of weapons and armor reveals the social standing of those interred here.
The mound can be viewed from the outside and information signs explain the archaeological findings on site. Visit during daylight hours when the display boards are most useful and the grounds are easy to navigate.
An iron sword with silver inlay bearing a king's name was discovered in one coffin, making it exceptionally rare. Such inscribed weapons provide researchers with unusual clues about political connections and alliances of that era.
