Imoaraizaka is a sloping road in the Roppongi district of Minato, Tokyo. It descends from the main Roppongi intersection and is lined on both sides with bars, restaurants, and small shops.
The road's name dates to the Edo period, when vendors reportedly washed taro roots near this spot. As Roppongi developed into a modern entertainment district through the 20th century, the street gradually took on its current character.
The name "Imoaraizaka" means "potato-washing slope" in Japanese, a reference to an older local practice that took place in the area. Today the road sits in the Roppongi district, where office workers and visitors pass through on their way to the many nearby bars and restaurants.
The road is easy to reach on foot from Roppongi Station. The slope is noticeable, so comfortable shoes are a good idea if you plan to walk the full length.
From certain spots on the slope, Tokyo Tower is visible in the distance, making it a favorite angle for photographers at night. This view is rarely mentioned in travel guides but is well known among locals.
