Arato Castle, Hill castle in Yuzawa, Japan
The stone foundations and defensive walls of Arato Castle spread across multiple levels on a strategic mountain position in Niigata Prefecture.
The Uesugi clan constructed Arato Castle in 1578 as a defensive fortification, which remained active until its decommissioning in 1598.
The architecture of Arato Castle reflects the military engineering principles of 16th-century Japanese fortification systems with multiple baileys and intricate pathways.
Visitors can reach the castle ruins by taking a 15-minute walk from Yukawa Station on the Ou Main Line railway system.
The castle site offers views of the surrounding Minamiuonuma district and contains preserved earthen mounds that mark the original fortress layout.
