Lake Shinsei, Natural lake in Hadano and Nakai, Japan
Lake Shinsei is a natural water body spanning Hadano City and Nakai Town in Kanagawa Prefecture. Its water surface rests at 152.7 meters (501 feet) above sea level, with maximum depths reaching 9 meters (30 feet).
The Great Kanto Earthquake of September 1, 1923, formed this lake when a 200-meter ground collapse dammed the Ichikizawa stream. This sudden geological event created what would become a permanent landmark in the region.
A stone memorial near the shore honors two local girls who died when the earthquake struck that created this geological formation. This remembrance site draws visitors who pause to reflect on the human cost of the natural disaster.
A 15-minute bus ride from JR Hadano Station brings you to the lake. Two free parking lots are available for those arriving by car.
This is Japan's youngest natural lake, having received official recognition as a Registered Monument in March 2021. This designation makes it one of the nation's newest protected natural landmarks.
