Kawarabuchi Shrine

Kawarabuchi Shrine is a smaller sanctuary in Funae featuring wooden structures and gabled roofs designed in the traditional Shinmei-zukuri style. The buildings sit on raised platforms, characteristic of this classical Japanese shrine form.

The sanctuary represents the transition from simple markers of sacred places to permanent religious buildings with specific architectural features. This evolution demonstrates how Japanese shrines became established over time.

Local people perform cleansing rituals at the water basin before entering the main prayer hall, showing how the shrine remains woven into everyday community practices.

Visitors reach the shrine via a pathway called sando, marked by traditional gates that signal entry into the sacred grounds. Wearing comfortable shoes is advisable as you may need to remove them in certain areas.
