Katsuyama Castle, Feudal castle in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture, Japan

Katsuyama Castle is a six-story concrete reconstruction standing 60 meters tall, making it the tallest castle structure in Japan. Inside is a museum displaying artifacts spanning 700 years, with an observation deck at the top offering city views.

The original site was established in 1579 by Shibata Katsuyasu and served as the administrative center of the Echizen-Katsuyama Domain during Japan's Edo period. The current structure is a modern reconstruction that preserves the historical significance of the location.

The castle has served as the heart of the community for centuries and remains central to how local residents see their city. People gather here during festivals and celebrations, making it a living symbol of regional pride and continuity.

The castle is easiest to reach by train to Katsuyama Station, with shuttle buses or taxis available from there. Plan enough time for the climb to the top and the observation deck, and check opening hours before visiting.

The stone walls feature dragon sculptures carved as protective symbols in Japanese tradition. These details are easy to miss but show the craftsmanship put into the castle's reconstruction.
