Hii Stone-gate, Natural rock formation in Hii-cho, Tahara, Japan.
Hii Stone-gate is a natural rock formation in Hii-chō shaped by Pacific Ocean waves over millennia. The stone displays a distinctive arch that cuts through the chert deposits along the coast.
The formation began as underwater sediment lifted by tectonic activity. Constant wave erosion gradually carved two separate rock gates into the deposits.
Local maritime communities incorporate the stone formation into their traditional fishing practices and navigation methods along the Pacific coastline.
Access is through Hii Garden, which has a viewing platform and parking available. The sight lines to the formation change depending on the season and tidal conditions.
Twice a year the sunrise shines directly through the rock opening in a rare optical event. This occurs during specific weeks in February and October.
