Hongokuji Temple is a Buddhist temple in Minobu set among hillside grounds with traditional wooden structures and multiple halls. The complex features a five-storied pagoda with striking red coloring, a nearly 300-step staircase leading upward, and well-maintained gardens with ancient cherry trees scattered throughout.
Founded in the mid-1400s by the monk Nisshin Shonin as a hermitage, the temple became closely tied to Nichiren Buddhism teachings. After relocating several times, it eventually settled near Nichiren's mausoleum and grew over centuries into an important pilgrimage destination for believers.
The temple serves as a center of faith for followers of Nichiren Buddhism, where daily services and prayers shape the rhythm of life. Morning chants led by monks, accompanied by drums and bells, create a devotional setting that visitors can join or simply observe.
The temple is easily accessible by car, train, or bus with designated parking available on-site. Visitors can join morning services without reservation and participate in activities like sutra copying, overnight stays, or simple meals prepared using local seasonal ingredients.
An ancient cherry tree called Shizuku no Sakura, over 700 years old, stands on the grounds with a legend tied to Nichiren's early teachings. According to the tale, a devoted disciple would secretly listen to Nichiren's lessons beneath its branches while dewdrops fell upon his clothes.
