上沢寺

Joganji Temple sits at the base of Mount Minobu with a main hall featuring traditional wooden architecture typical of Buddhist temples from this region. Inside the hall, a painted dragon decorates the ceiling in a way that its eyes appear to follow you no matter where you stand.

The temple was established during the Kamakura period and became closely tied to the growth of the Nichiren school of Buddhism, which became influential throughout Japan during that era. On the grounds grows a special cherry tree called Shizuku no Sakura that has stood there for approximately 7 centuries. Many visitors seek out this tree because ancient stories connect it to teachings about the nature of Buddhist wisdom.
