上沢寺

Joganji Temple sits at the base of Mount Minobu with a main hall featuring traditional wooden architecture typical of Buddhist temples from this region. Inside the hall, a painted dragon decorates the ceiling in a way that its eyes appear to follow you no matter where you stand.

The temple was established during the Kamakura period and became closely tied to the growth of the Nichiren school of Buddhism, which became influential throughout Japan during that era. Its architecture and interior design reflect the religious importance this school maintained over the centuries.

This temple serves as a central gathering place for followers of Nichiren Buddhism, who come here to practice their faith and participate in community rituals. The location at the mountain's base provides devotees with a space that supports deep spiritual reflection and connection.

The temple is best reached using public transportation, as the roads to the grounds are narrow and parking is limited. Arriving in early morning hours is recommended to experience clear weather and avoid crowds of other visitors.

On the grounds grows a special cherry tree called Shizuku no Sakura that has stood there for approximately 7 centuries. Many visitors seek out this tree because ancient stories connect it to teachings about the nature of Buddhist wisdom.
