Shizuhi Shrine is a Shinto shrine located on a low hill in Wakayama, surrounded by bamboo groves and trees. The site features a wooden gate at the entrance, a simple prayer hall with a copper roof and traditional gabled design, with a main sanctuary building behind it.
The shrine is mentioned in ancient texts and has been revered by the local community for centuries. In 1724, it was relocated and rebuilt on a new site under orders from the Kishuu clan to establish a safer location away from flooding.
The shrine brings the local community together during festivals and religious observances. People gather to pray and participate in traditional ceremonies that have been passed down through generations. The stone lanterns and wooden structures around the grounds reflect the area's spiritual heritage.
The shrine is about 10 minutes by car from Wakayama IC and has parking available on site. The path up to the shrine follows a hillside with stairs and wooden railings, and walking sticks are provided for those who need assistance with the climb.
The shrine has a former location about 200 meters east of its current position, marked by a stone inscribed with 'Shizuhi Shrine Former Site'. This unusual relocation of the sacred place reflects the evolving relationship between the shrine and the community over time.
