Kamienya Tsukiyama Kofun, Circular burial mound in Izumo, Japan.
Kamienya Tsukiyama Kofun is a circular burial mound in Izumo with a diameter of about 46 meters and height of about 6 meters. Two stone burial chambers lie within the structure, and a wide moat runs around the entire site.
This burial mound dates to the Kofun period, when such monuments were built for important people. Scientific excavations beginning in 1985 uncovered valuable items like jade beads, gilt-bronze crowns, and weapons that belonged to the buried person.
The pottery and clay figures found here show how people in the Kofun period honored their dead through craftsmanship. These objects reveal what mattered to the community and how they imagined the afterlife.
The mound sits on elevated ground along the north bank of the Kobe River near Izumo. Visitors can walk around the site to see the circular shape and the surrounding moat from different angles.
A moat about 16 meters wide encircles this burial mound, creating a clear boundary between the sacred space and the surrounding land. This distinctive feature contributed to its designation as a National Historic Site in 1924.
