Kattamine-jinja, shrine in Zaō, Miyagi
Kattamine-jinja is a small Shinto shrine located in the Zao area of Miyagi Prefecture. The complex features a main worship hall, traditional gates, and a stone monument known as Swan Old Stone Monument, all recognized as cultural properties by Zao Town.
The shrine was built in 1718 by Katakura, a local lord of nearby Shiroishi Castle and trusted retainer of the Date clan. It has since served as an important place of worship and has been maintained by the local community across generations.
The shrine is dedicated to swans, which are revered as symbols of purity and grace in this place. Visitors can see votive tablets depicting swans that have been left as offerings of devotion.
The shrine is a short walk from the Miya bus stop and entry is free. There is no parking lot on site, making public transportation or walking the most practical way to arrive.
The shrine is called an Okunomiya, or secondary shrine, due to its remote location and was historically difficult to reach during winter. Visitors can obtain shuin stamps and ema votive tablets directly from the priest who tends to the grounds.
