Ogawa Falls, Mountain waterfall in Osumi Peninsula, Japan
Ogawa Falls is a waterfall on the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan, where water drops over a wide cliff face into a natural basin below. The water runs across layered rock surfaces before pooling in the basin and continuing downstream.
The falls became widely known after appearing in the opening sequence of the NHK television drama Segodon in 2018. That broadcast brought visitors from across Japan to this previously little-visited corner of Kagoshima.
The name Ogawa refers to a small river, and the falls sit within a forested ravine that feels largely untouched by development. Visitors often stand at the edge of the basin and watch the water shift color depending on the light and time of day.
A paved walking trail leads from the parking area to the falls, and the path is manageable for most visitors. Marked viewpoints along the route offer different angles of the falls, and visits are only possible during daylight hours.
Although the falls sit in a natural setting, the water flow is influenced by an upstream hydroelectric facility, which means water levels can vary from one visit to the next. On quieter days, the pale sand and worn stones on the basin floor are visible through the water above.
