Onomichi U2, Commercial complex in Onomichi, Japan.
Onomichi U2 is a commercial complex housed in a former warehouse that now combines multiple functions under one roof: a hotel, restaurant, bar, café, bakery, lifestyle shop, and bicycle store. The facility spans roughly 2000 square meters (21,500 sq ft) and creates a unified destination for accommodation, dining, and shopping.
The building was constructed in 1943 as a prefectural warehouse serving local administrative needs. In March 2014, it underwent complete redevelopment by architect Makoto Tanijiri to become the commercial complex it is today.
The interior design references Onomichi's traditional character through the use of wood, mortar, and steel frames that echo the city's wooden houses and shipbuilding past. These materials connect visitors to the local identity and craft traditions embedded in the place.
The complex is located roughly five minutes on foot from JR Onomichi Station, making it easy to reach from the train. The hotel offers bicycle hangers in all 28 rooms and a bike rental service available directly at the Giant Store on site.
The internal layout mirrors the structure of Onomichi's traditional shopping arcades, with a central path that connects all the establishments within the complex. This design creates a walkable experience that echoes the configuration of the city's historic shopping streets.
