Setagawa Bridge, Steel box girder bridge in Ōtsu, Japan.
Setagawa Bridge is a steel box girder bridge that crosses the Setagawa River and connects two neighborhoods on either side. The structure spans 221 meters in its main section with a width of 11 meters, integrated into National Route 1 as part of the local road network.
Construction of this bridge started in 1958 using steel sheet piles instead of traditional caissons to reduce expenses. The structure opened in 1959 and has served as a key transportation link across the river ever since.
The bridge incorporates circular handrails and traditional mercury lamps that reflect Japanese design elements while maintaining harmony with the surrounding environment.
The bridge sits near Keihan Ishiyama Station and forms part of the local road system with access from surrounding neighborhoods. Visitors can view the structure from the riverbank or drive across it as part of their route through the area.
The central span stretches 65 meters to allow large tour boats to pass underneath without obstruction. This generous opening was intentionally designed to accommodate river traffic in the area.
