近江大橋, Road bridge in Shiga Prefecture, Japan
The Oumi Bridge is a road bridge in Shiga Prefecture that crosses Lake Biwa, connecting the cities of Otsu and Kusatsu. The structure spans approximately 1,290 meters across the water and features four traffic lanes plus a separate path for pedestrians and cyclists.
The bridge first opened on September 26, 1974, and initially operated as a toll road for motorists. In December 2013, it became free to cross for all vehicles.
The bridge serves as a vital connection point between the eastern and western shores of Lake Biwa, facilitating regional exchanges and commerce.
The bridge is accessible to cars, pedestrians, and cyclists, offering a direct route across the lake. A separate path for walkers ensures a safe and comfortable crossing with open views across the water.
The bridge structure features solar panels that generate electricity for road lighting and facilities. This sustainable approach shows how infrastructure crossing the lake can reduce energy consumption.
