Genjū-an

Genjū-an is a historic wooden house located on the grounds of Chikatsuo Shrine in Ōtsu, featuring traditional Japanese construction with thatched roof. The structure reflects minimalist design principles while sitting naturally within the surrounding forested hillside.

The house dates to the Genroku period and is closely tied to poet Matsuo Basho, who lived there from 1688 to 1704. During his residence, Basho wrote his renowned journal Genjū-an Nikki, which recorded his creative legacy at this location.

The house displays traditional Japanese design with open spaces that frame views of the surrounding nature. This approach reflects the philosophy of blending indoor and outdoor worlds together.

The site is accessible by foot from Keihan Ishiyama-dera Station or by direct bus to the Genjū-an stop. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since access involves walking through hilly forest paths.

A stone monument inscribed with a Basho haiku stands on the grounds, preserving the poet's personal connection to this place. This marker blends quietly into the surrounding landscape and is easily missed if not specifically sought out.
