This area was officially organized as an independent municipality in 1889 during an administrative reorganization of Otagi district. Over time, it lost its separate status and merged with other surrounding regions.
The Kurama Fire Festival happens each October 22 and shows how much the community values its traditions. Local residents carry large torches through the streets toward Yuki Shrine, keeping alive a custom that is deeply rooted in daily life.
A cable car takes visitors halfway up the mountain to reach Kuramadera Temple. From there, hiking trails continue through the forest toward Kibune, offering options for different time and fitness levels.
