Kibune

Kibune is a traditional shrine-town in the northern mountains of Kyoto with wooden restaurants and shops lining a narrow path alongside the Kibune River. The walkway follows the water upstream while remaining closely shaded by surrounding trees.

The Kibune shrine originated around a goddess who, according to legend, traveled by boat from Osaka through the northern mountains. The place later developed into a pilgrimage destination and retreat for city dwellers.

The shrine honors a water deity, and visitors can purchase special fortune papers that reveal hidden messages when placed in the river.

The area is best explored on foot, as pathways are narrow and winding with limited vehicle access. Comfortable shoes are important, since there are slopes and uneven ground throughout the walk.

From June to September, visitors can dine on wooden platforms that extend directly over the river, offering a rare experience of eating above flowing water. These seasonal outdoor terraces are a local feature that often surprises guests.
