Kokei-ji is a Buddhist temple in Hachioji featuring traditional Japanese architecture with wooden structures, carved details, and sliding doors throughout its buildings. The complex comprises multiple halls arranged on the grounds, each displaying refined craftsmanship and period design elements.
The temple was founded in 1384 by monk Jun'ō Ryōzan on the site of a former hermitage called Shirasawa-an, which had been established in 1297 by monk Kyōō Unryō.
The temple belongs to the Rinzai sect of Nanzen-ji and houses the principal deity Jizō Bodhisattva, who serves as a protector for travelers and children.
The temple is accessible by bus from Takao Station followed by a short walk to reach the entrance. The grounds are open during daylight hours and can be explored at your own pace without requiring prior arrangements.
The temple grounds include a monument dedicated to Nakama Uzuhi, who composed the lyrics to Yuyake Koyake, a song inspired by the surrounding mountain landscape.
