Seosamneung

Seosamneung is a burial complex containing three royal tombs distributed across landscaped grounds in northern Goyang. The graves connect through maintained pathways and feature stone sculptures, ceremonial elements, and carefully designed spaces that reflect the site's formal royal purpose.

The tombs were built during the Joseon Dynasty and hold royal figures from multiple generations between the 15th and 20th centuries. The complex expanded as new burials were added and the royal family continued choosing this location for its tombs.

The site displays traditional Korean burial customs through stone guardians, ceremonial pathways, and symbolic arrangements placed deliberately around each tomb. These elements remain visible today, showing how funeral rites were observed and what they meant to the royal families.

The site is easy to explore on foot with marked paths that lead to each tomb and provide information signs throughout. The mostly flat terrain makes visiting accessible for most people, and there are quiet areas for resting along the way.

The complex was positioned following geomantic principles, with graves arranged according to traditional rules for location and orientation to create harmony with the natural land. This invisible order shapes the entire layout but goes unnoticed by many visitors.
