Samneung

Samneung contains three separate royal tombs set on elevated terrain with traditional stone sculptures and ceremonial pathways. The grounds are arranged across a calm area with organized landscaping and marked walking routes connecting the individual burial sites.

This burial ground developed during the Joseon Dynasty as a final resting place for members of the royal family. The tombs demonstrate the burial practices and spiritual beliefs of that historical period.

The tombs follow traditional Korean burial design with wooden shrine structures, stone statues, and specific orientations based on Confucian beliefs. The arrangement and decoration of these burial sites reflect the rank and importance of those buried here.

The site is best explored on foot, as marked pathways connect all the burial areas. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the terrain is hilly with some stairways in places.

Two royal sisters rest in adjacent tombs positioned to face each other. This unusual burial arrangement is rare in Korean royal history.
