Gyeongneung

Gyeongneung is a royal burial site in Goyang with three distinct sections: an entrance pavilion with ceremonial structures, a ritual space for offerings, and a burial mound with stone sculptures. The complex displays the classic layout of Joseon Dynasty tomb sites with clearly defined functional areas.

The site was constructed in 1457 and houses the remains of Crown Prince Deokjong of the Joseon Dynasty. It belongs to a larger tomb complex from a period when the ruling family systematically arranged its memorial sites.

The site reflects traditional Korean geomancy principles that guided its careful placement in the landscape. Visitors can observe how this spiritual alignment shaped the arrangement of all structures.

The burial site is accessible year-round and can be visited independently or as part of a pre-booked guided tour. Information and reservations are available at the visitor center on site.

Stone figures of military officers, civil officials, tigers, and sheep surround the burial mound, placed according to strict rules of Joseon tomb architecture. These stone guardians follow ancient conventions that were typical for burial sites of this era.
